Diaspora^[1][2][3][4] (stilisiert DIASPORA*) ist ein nicht-kommerzieller Open Source-Webserver zum Betrieb dezentraler, interoperabler, also anschlussfähiger und kompatibler, sozialer Netzwerkdienste (Diaspora Pod) zur Kommunikation^[5] und zum Abbilden sozialer Netzwerke im Web (Diaspora Seed)^{[6][7][8][9][10]}: Diaspora folgt der dezentralen, föderativen Informationsarchitektur des Internets und wurde explizit als Alternative zu zentralisierten Netzwerkdiensten wie etwa Facebook, Twitter oder Google Plus konzipiert.^[11][12] Die Privatsphäre der Benutzer^[13][14], insbesondere deren Kontrollmöglichkeiten über Daten, Inhalte, Social Graph, und die Sicherheit der Kommunikation^[15] sind elementar für Diaspora.^[16] - Seit der Version Diaspora Alpha^[17] steht ein öffentlich zugänglicher Diaspora Pod des Kernentwicklerteams unter JoinDiaspora.com zur Verfügung.
